The organization of the defense support system: an economic geography perspective

In the context of restricted budgetary resources and the growing cost of maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) activities, a major issue for modern armed forces is to sustain defense platforms. A possible method consists of realizing economies of scale through the concentration of maintenance activities, which involves the spatial reorganization of existing industrial sites dedicated to MRO. Changes in Climate and Land Use Over the Amazon Region: Current and Future Variability and Trends

This paper shows recent progress in our understanding of climate variability and trends in the Amazon region, and how these interact with land use change. The review includes an overview of up-to-date information on climate and hydrological variability, and on warming trends in Amazonia, which reached 0.6-0.7 °C over the last 40 years, with 2016 as the warmest year since at least 1950 (0.9 °C +0.3°C). We focus on local and remote drivers of climate variability and change. This chapter contains a description of a set of simulation experiments for exploration of the agent-based model proposed in the present work, devised to illustrate the model’s generative capacity and highlight the influence of the newly introduced mechanisms on the complexity of the solutions. The first experiment shows the influence of the critical “cop”-to-“active” ratio ρ c in the risk perception model on the size, duration, and recurrence of rebellion peaks. Early warning of systemic risk in global banking: eigen-pair R number for financial contagion and market price-based methods

AbstractWe analyse systemic risk in the core global banking system using a new network-based spectral eigen-pair method, which treats network failure as a dynamical system stability problem. This is compared with market price-based Systemic Risk Indexes (SRIs), viz. Marginal Expected Shortfall (MES), Delta Conditional Value-at-Risk (Delta-CoVaR), and Conditional Capital Shortfall Measure of Systemic Risk (SRISK) in a cross-border setting.
